Can Dogs Drink Coconut Water?

Yes, dogs can drink coconut water in small amounts. Natural coconut water can be a hydrating beverage for your dog, and it provides many beneficial vitamins and nutrients. However, too much coconut water can cause stomach upset or excessive urination, and it should never replace plain water as a primary source of hydration. Ensure your coconut water is free of harmful artificial sweeteners like xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

You can freeze coconut water in an ice cube tray to offer your pet a refreshing dog treat on a hot day. Whenever you introduce a new food into your dog’s diet, monitor your pet for symptoms of an allergic reaction or upset stomach.

Coconut Water vs. Coconut Milk for Dogs

Dogs can consume both coconut water and coconut milk in moderation. Coconut water is the clear liquid from young coconuts, whereas coconut milk is a dairy-free milk substitute made from water and grated coconut meat. Coconut milk is much higher in fat than coconut water.

Pet owners can safely incorporate small amounts of organic, unsweetened coconut milk into their dog’s diet. However, coconut products containing additives like sugar, preservatives, and additional fats—whether coconut milk, coconut oil, or coconut water—are not safe for dogs to consume. Too much fat in your dog’s diet can lead to weight gain or obesity, and large amounts of added sugar can cause gastrointestinal distress, including an upset stomach, loose stools, and bloating.
