What Is a Burrito Bowl?

A burrito bowl is a dish filled with all the ingredients typically found in a burrito, including meat, rice, beans, salsa, guacamole, cheese, and grilled vegetables, in a bowl. The Mexican-inspired dish makes for a customizable, easy-to-assemble weeknight dinner.

6 Common Burrito Bowl Ingredients

You can fill a burrito bowl with a variety of ingredients, but classic options include:

  1. 1. Beans: Black beans, refried beans, and pinto beans are standard ingredients in traditional burrito bowls.
  2. 2. Cheese: Melting cheeses like Oaxacan cheese or cheddar cheese make a perfect complement for a warm burrito bowl.
  3. 3. Rice: Rice is a standard base ingredient in traditional burrito bowls. Use brown rice, white rice, cilantro lime rice, or Spanish rice. Or, swap out rice for protein-packed quinoa. For a grain-free burrito bowl, try cauliflower rice.
  4. 4. Vegetables: Grilled onions, bell peppers, pickled red onions, jalapeños, and corn can add volume and texture to your burrito bowl. You can also add shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes for a satisfying crunch.
  5. 5. Sauces: Sauces can add flavor and moisture to burrito bowls. Mexican crema, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, and hot sauce are typical sauces for burrito bowls.
  6. 6. Meat: Burrito bowls often feature protein, like ground beef picadillo with taco seasoning, grilled chicken breasts, boneless chicken thighs, pork carnitas, or beef barbacoa. For a vegetarian or vegan burrito bowl, skip the meat and load up on veggies instead.
