What Is Broiled Asparagus?

Broiled asparagus is a side dish that is gluten-free, vegan, and easy to make since it requires only four basic ingredients: asparagus, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Roasting or broiling asparagus in the oven adds crispy caramelization to the spring vegetable’s skin, making for a more complex flavor, for example, in an asparagus salad or chopped salad—two dishes you might typically enjoy with steamed or boiled asparagus tossed in a vinaigrette.

Additionally, you can customize broiled or oven-roasted asparagus with versatile seasoning combinations, such as lemon juice and red pepper flakes; or walnuts, parmesan, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

Asparagus Nutrition Information

Fresh asparagus is a low-calorie vegetable that contains multiple valuable nutrients.

  • Antioxidants: Asparagus, especially purple asparagus, is high in antioxidants, which help protect your cells from the effects of oxidative stress (a contributing factor to aging, chronic inflammation, and multiple diseases).
  • Asparagine: This amino acid can help with brain development. It’s also a natural diuretic, meaning asparagine helps the body flush out excess fluids and salts, which can prevent urinary tract infections.
  • Fiber: A half-cup of asparagus contains almost two grams of fiber, an essential component for good digestive health. The soluble fiber in asparagus can also help to lower cholesterol.
  • Potassium: Asparagus is a good source of potassium, known for lowering blood pressure by relaxing the walls of blood vessels and helping the body to excrete salts.
  • Vitamins: Half a cup of cooked asparagus is low in carbohydrates and has only 20 calories but provides 12 percent of your reference daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C and 18 percent of your RDI of vitamin A. Asparagus is also a good source of vitamin K, which contributes to bone health and helps to facilitate blood clotting when you get a cut or scrape.

Turn on your oven’s broiler so it can start to warm.

  2. 2

Snap off and discard the asparagus’ woody ends.
