Bobbi Brown’s 8 Tips to Take Your Makeup From Day to Night

The main difference between day makeup and night makeup is that you’re in completely different lighting. With the evening being dimmer overall, your makeup will need to be a bit more saturated to stand out. This doesn’t necessarily mean that now is the time to pile it on, but adding more color and contrast will be more visible in low lighting. You don’t have to start from scratch if your evening plans require a makeup switch.

How to Refresh Your Makeup for an Evening Out in 4 Steps
Here’s how to update your everyday makeup for going out, step by step:
- 1. Touch up your face makeup: Try powder foundation for oily skin or a creamy concealer for dry skin. Make sure blemishes and dark circles are smooth and hydrated before touching up makeup.
- 2. Add a bold lip: Use lip liner to help keep your lipstick in place (especially for red lipstick!) and emphasize the natural curve of your lips. A red lip is a classic, but you might want to go for something more subtle if you’re doing a dramatic eye look or another bold color that works really well with your skin tone.
- 3. Emphasize the eyes: Some classic options for the eyes are a winged or cat-eye look (use liquid eyeliner) or a smoky eye, which requires a little more effort. Both options can be layered on top of daytime eye makeup. Or take the simplest route, and just add a little shimmer to the upper lids. Touch up mascara and use an eyelash curler, if needed.
- 4. Illuminate: Swipe a little highlighter or shimmery bronzer on the top of your cheekbones for subtle sparkle.
Bobbi Brown’s 8 Tips to Take Your Makeup From Day to Night
If you’re having a night out right after a long day at work, you can transition from a no-makeup makeup, daytime look to something more glam. Try makeup artist Bobbi Brown’s beauty tips for intensifying your eye makeup, putting skincare first, and adding a sultry pout.
- 1. If you’re not able to make a pit stop at home before changing venues, keep versatility in mind when packing your on-the-go makeup kit. Any makeup products you can apply and blend with your fingers will be helpful—that includes cream eyeshadow and shimmer, cream blush, and stick foundation or concealer.
- 2. Make sure you have good lighting wherever you’re doing your makeup.
- 3. Keep cotton swabs on hand to reverse mistakes, remove any makeup, or blend.
- 4. Always check your face first to see where you think your skin needs freshening up. A spritz of a face mist and reapplying moisturizer will help “wake up” your skin by flooding moisture back into it and softening it.
- 5. Reapplying your foundation and concealer in areas where it’s faded and where redness or dullness shows through makes a big difference, especially if you’re going to do a dramatic eye.
- 6. When reapplying mascara, it helps to have a clean spoolie brush around to get rid of clumps on your eyelashes.
- 7. Now is the time to play with texture and color, so Bobbi encourages topping a daytime eye look with a dusting of shimmer and wearing a bold lip color.
- 8. One thing you can easily do for a big impact is deepening your eyeshadow or eyeliner with a slightly darker shade than what you already have on. Or wear a bolder lip color in a cream or matte finish (as opposed to a sheer tint or lip gloss).
