What Is a Blueberry Mojito?
A Blueberry Mojito is a variation of a classic Mojito cocktail featuring muddled fresh blueberries. If you know how to make a Mojito—muddle mint leaves with sugar and lime juice and top the mixture off with white rum and club soda—you can easily incorporate a sweet berry flavor and an attractive purple hue by introducing blueberries into the muddling stage.
6 Tips for Making Blueberry Mojitos
There are many variations on Blueberry Mojitos. Use these tips to decide how you’ll make yours, depending on the tools you have on hand and your preferences.
- 1. Use either fresh or frozen blueberries. Both fresh and frozen blueberries work for a Blueberry Mojito. Since the blueberries get crushed into the drink, their texture isn’t critical.
- 2. If you don’t have a muddler, use a wooden spoon. There’s no need to purchase a muddler to make this drink. The back of a wooden spoon is sufficient for crushing blueberries, mint, sugar, and lime together to release flavorful essential oils and juice. (If you do want to stock your home bar, these are the essential bar tools you’ll need.)
- 3. Decide whether to shake or stir. Traditional Cuban Mojitos involve muddling mint, sugar, and lime juice directly into a Highball glass, but many other recipes use a cocktail shaker. Building your Blueberry Mojito in a cocktail shaker is a more streamlined approach. First, muddle the solid ingredients in the shaker, then add the ice and liquids. Shake and strain the mixture into a glass and garnish with mint sprigs and a lime wheel.
- 4. Choose a type of sugar. Deciding on whether to use simple syrup or granulated sugar depends on how you choose to prepare your Blueberry Mojito. If serving your Blueberry Mojito shaken, use simple syrup, since granulated sugar won’t fully dissolve during the shaking process. Use granulated sugar when making a Blueberry Mojito directly in a Highball glass. The granulated sugar creates extra friction during the muddling process, bringing the mint essential oils and blueberry flavor to the forefront.
- 5. Select your ice. Ice cubes are best for shaken Mojitos, but you may want to use a combination of crushed ice and cubes for a built-in-glass Mojito.
- 6. Choose your preferred light rum. Cuban white rum is the classic choice for Mojitos, but it’s perfectly acceptable to use any light rum for a Blueberry Mojito. If you want to make a Dirty Blueberry Mojito, use gold rum and raw or demerara sugar. Use dark rum to make a Dark Rum Blueberry Mojito. Learn more about the different types of rum.
