What Are Blueberry Cookies?
Blueberry cookies are sweet cookies that use fresh blueberries, frozen blueberries, or dried blueberries. You can start with a sugar cookie dough or a chocolate chip cookie recipe (simply replace the chocolate chips with blueberries) to make blueberry cookies. To mimic the flavors of a blueberry muffin, add oats, brown sugar, and whatever other ingredients you associate with a crumb muffin topping into your blueberry cookies mix.
3 Tips for Making Homemade Blueberry Cookies
To achieve a flavorful cookie with good texture, keep these tips in mind if you’re making blueberry cookies:
- 1. Decide between fresh or frozen blueberries. If your goal is to make naturally purple cookies, use fresh berries or defrost your berries completely first. Microwave the blueberries for several seconds, then mash them and allow them to cool to room temperature before adding them to the cookie dough. Alternatively, frozen berries prevent the cookie dough from turning totally purple and help the cookies keep a firmer shape while they cook.
- 2. Choose a base cookie recipe carefully. Your preferred sweetness and texture in a cookie should determine which cookie recipe you select as your base recipe. Sugar cookie recipes, shortbread cookie recipes, and chocolate chip cookie recipes are all good options. Remember that adding blueberries to the cookie dough will add a fruity sweetness but also a slightly tart taste.
- 3. Use complementary flavors in the cookie dough. Lemon plus blueberry is a common flavor pairing. Adding lemon juice and lemon zest to the cookies will add a tart citrus flavor to a sweet cookie. White and dark chocolate also pair well with blueberries—add chocolate chips to the cookie dough if you want additional sweetness and a contrast in textures and flavors.
