What Is Artichoke Dip?
Artichoke dip is a savory dip consisting of chopped artichoke hearts mixed with mayonnaise and dairy products, whether cream cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, sour cream, or yogurt. While hot artichoke dip is the most common preparation method, you can also make a chilled variation for easy transport and serving.
Serve the classic appetizer in a casserole dish or hollowed-out bread bowl, alongside tortilla chips, slices of toasted bread, like a baguette or crostini, pita chips, or a veggie platter featuring carrots, celery, radishes, and halved florets of broccoli.
3 Artichoke Dip Variations
Artichoke dip is a great dish to enjoy on game day, BBQs at the park, or during family gatherings. Here are different ways to prepare the dip:
- 1. Chilled: The most common way to prepare artichoke dip is to bake or cook it in a slow cooker until the mayonnaise and cheese turn melty as the artichokes braise in the flavorful fat. However, chilled artichoke dip is considerably less time-sensitive and a better fit for picnics and on-the-go events.
- 2. With spinach: Spinach artichoke dip may be the most iconic style of artichoke dip. Frozen spinach (or fresh spinach sautéed with a drizzle of olive oil) lends a vibrant green color, and the mayonnaise and cheese can cling to it, making the dip less drippy. Fresh chopped herbs can have a similar effect.
- 3. Cheese-free: For a healthier take on the classic party dip, swap the cheese for full-fat Greek yogurt to retain the creamy texture of the final dish (low-fat will be too runny).

(For a finer texture, pulse the artichokes, garlic, and peppers together in the bowl of a food processor three or four times until combined, then mix them in with the mayonnaise and cream cheese.)
