What Is an Anal Orgasm?
An anal orgasm occurs when you climax from stimulation of your anus, which is full of sensitive nerve endings. While penis owners can experience a unique prostate orgasm from anal stimulation, an anal orgasm is possible no matter your gender and sexual orientation.
Basic Anal Sex Safety
Practicing safer anal sex and maintaining good hygiene practices are key for any type of anal play.
- Cleanliness: Your anus naturally contains bacteria, which can spread during anal sex. Having vaginal sex right after anal sex can cause a vaginal infection. Always remember to change your condom and wash yourself before and after anal sex. Pathogens passed via oral-anal sex (also known as rimming or analingus) can include E. coli and the hepatitis A virus. Consider using a dental dam if you plan to participate in analingus.
- Lubrication: Proper lubrication is essential for any form of anal play. Start by applying a generous amount of lube in and around your anal opening. Apply additional lube to your finger, penis, or sex toy before insertion, and reapply often. Consider water-based lubricants or silicone-based lubricants, which last longer. (Oil-based lubes are not safe to use with condoms as they break down latex.)
- Communication: Before engaging in anal play with your partner, make sure you have their consent.
6 Techniques for Achieving an Anal Orgasm
Experiencing an anal orgasm takes patience and practice. These techniques can help you reach anal orgasm, with or without a partner.
- 1. Relax your anal sphincter muscles. Masturbate or try foreplay techniques with your partner; take a long bath, light some candles, and put on sexy music before engaging in anal play. Other types of orgasms, like a clitoral orgasm, can help relax your sphincter muscles and increase your chances of an anal orgasm.
- 2. Start with your finger. At first, experiment on your own with anal masturbation. Apply lube to your anus and pinky finger, then slide your pinky gently inside your anus. Let your finger rest there for a moment, allowing your body to get used to the sensation. Once you feel comfortable, reapply lube and use a larger finger. Be patient with yourself. Getting comfortable with anal penetration takes time—proper anal training can take weeks or even months. Make sure you are experienced with fingers or smaller toys before moving on to a penis or strap-on dildo.
- 3. Explore with sex toys. Some sex toys are specifically designed to stimulate the nerves in your anus; these include butt plugs, anal beads, prostate massagers, and anal dildos. The important thing to look for when choosing an anal sex toy is a handle with a flared base or a loop to ensure that the toy won’t accidentally slip into your rectum. Anal sex toys are typically made of silicone or stainless steel, and some include vibration settings. These toys require lots of lube and regular cleaning with warm water and mild soap or sex toy cleaner.
- 4. Experiment with a partner. Before trying anal intercourse, consider rimming with your tongue or fingering the anus lightly. Try out a few anal sex positions until you find one that works well for you and your partner.
- 5. Explore different techniques. If you are the giver, ask for your partner's feedback, and pay attention to how they respond to each technique. Consider stimulating the pudendal nerve, which is the main nerve running through the perineum, or the area between the genitals and anus. If your partner has a penis, try inserting your finger into the anus about two to four inches deep, angling up toward the belly button. You should feel the prostate, a firm walnut-sized gland, through the rectum's front wall.
- 6. Stimulate other erogenous zones. While having anal sex or performing an anal massage, focus on other erogenous zones like the scrotum, clitoris, neck, or nipples. Ask your partner what erogenous zones are pleasurable for them. For vulva owners, try stimulating the anterior fornix (also known as the A-spot), located inside the vagina between the cervix and the bladder. You can also practice clitoral stimulation during anal sex for enhanced pleasure.
